This is a good question. In the Universe there are actually no directions because east and west are relative. The reason why the Pure Land is in the west is because the west is the direction where the sun sets, signifying that this is where we will go home at the end of this life - to Amitabha Buddha’s Pure Land. Hence, the Buddha told us the Pure Land is to the west of this world.
